Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988. In 1989, he made the Keith Haring Foundation. It was made to provide funding and imagery to AIDS organizations and children’s programs, and to show off Haring’s work through exhibitions, publications and the licensing of his images. Some of Haring's last works were made about AIDS to show AIDS awareness. While Haring was suffering through AIDS, he started to become famous. Newspapers and magazines published his work all throughout the country.Keith Haring died of AIDS at the age of 31 on February 16, 1990. His memorial service was held at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City on May 4, 1990. Over 1,000 people attended.
